Open white vinyl fence with three horizontal rails fitted into square capped posts

WHOLESALE VINYL FENCE SUPPLY

Fence Planning Guide

Plan your vinyl fence with clear measurements, the right post roles and a complete quote checklist. Follow these four steps to turn a rough sketch into a useful materials inquiry.

SKETCH & MEASURE

Start with the shape of your fence.

A simple drawing is enough. Work around the boundary in order, label each run, and keep gate openings separate. These details make a vinyl fence materials quote easier to review.

A / FENCE RUNS

Measure each straight run.

Give each run a letter and record its length. Mark the start, finish and every change of direction. Use one unit of measurement throughout your sketch.

B / GATE OPENINGS

Show where access is needed.

Record the opening you want, the number of gates and the swing direction. Flag nearby walls, paths or obstructions that could affect the opening.

C / STYLE & FINISH

Describe the result you want.

Choose privacy, semi-privacy, picket or post & rail. Add your preferred height and color, and note whether you need a new system or parts for an existing fence.

CONNECT THE SYSTEM

Every run needs the right connections.

Separate the measurements first. Then mark the role of each post so rails, infill and gate hardware can be reviewed as one compatible system.

Example only—not to scale. Record gate openings separately from fence runs. Final post spacing depends on the selected system.

End posts

Definition
A post that terminates a vinyl fence run, typically with rail connections on one face.

Purpose
Secures the final section and provides a finished stopping point.

Common uses

  • Start or finish of a property boundary
  • End of a short screening panel
Example
At the start of Run A in the sketch, an end post receives the rails from one direction.

Line posts

Definition
An intermediate post between two fence sections continuing in a straight line.

Purpose
Joins adjacent sections and keeps rails and panels aligned.

Common uses

  • Long, straight side boundaries
  • Intermediate positions between end and corner posts
Example
Along Run A, line posts connect consecutive sections at the spacing specified for the selected system.

Corner posts

Definition
A post that connects fence runs at a change of direction; routed versions commonly serve a 90-degree turn.

Purpose
Provides connections for adjoining runs and establishes the corner of the layout.

Common uses

  • Corners of a yard enclosure
  • Turns between front and side boundaries
Example
Where Run A turns into Run B, a corner post connects the two runs. Other angles need a suitable system detail.

Gate posts

Definition
A post at a gate opening configured for hinge or latch hardware.

Purpose
Supports the gate and its hardware; reinforcement must follow the gate system requirements.

Common uses

  • Pedestrian access openings
  • Single- or double-leaf gate locations
Example
At the 4 ft opening shown, identify the hinge-side and latch-side posts and confirm the support required for each.

Comparison of the four fence post types

Compare the role of each post in a vinyl fence system. Post names describe their position and connections; they are not universal strength ratings.

Post Type

Primary Function

Typical Location

Structural Strength

Post Type
End Post

Primary Function
Terminates and supports a fence run

Typical Location
Beginning or end of a fence

Structural Strength
System-dependent; specify for the end condition

Post Type
Line Post

Primary Function
Connects and supports adjacent sections

Typical Location
Intermediate points along straight runs

Structural Strength
System-dependent; sized for panel and site loads

Post Type
Corner Post

Primary Function
Connects runs at a change of direction

Typical Location
Fence corners and turns

Structural Strength
System-dependent; corner connections must suit the layout

Post Type
Gate Post

Primary Function
Carries hinge or latch hardware for a gate

Typical Location
Sides of gate openings

Structural Strength
Gate-specific support; reinforcement may be required

Confirm post profiles, connections, reinforcement and foundations for the selected fence and gate system. A corner post is not automatically stronger than a line post, and a standard end post is not automatically suitable for carrying a gate.

NOTE THE SITE DETAILS

Capture what a tape measure cannot.

GROUND

Slopes & level changes

Mark sloping runs, steps and changes in ground level. Add a photo or a short note showing where each change occurs.

CONNECTIONS

Surfaces & obstructions

Describe the intended mounting surface. Mark walls, paving, nearby structures and the space needed for gate movement.

MATCHING PARTS

Existing fence systems

For replacement parts, provide photos and any known brand, profile or dimensions. Similar-looking parts may use different routing or connections.

Before finalizing your layout
Confirm the intended boundary and any project-specific requirements with the appropriate local professional. This guide helps prepare a supply inquiry; it is not an installation or structural design.

PREPARE YOUR INQUIRY

Your quote-ready checklist.

Gather what you know and clearly mark anything still to be confirmed. You can use the form below to send the key details.

Your fence layout

✓ Style, height & color
Tell us your preferred appearance and screening level.

✓ Labeled runs & post roles
List each run length, corners, ends and changes in direction.

✓ Gate details
Include opening widths, quantity and intended swing.

✓ Site or replacement details
Describe slopes, mounting surfaces or parts you need to match.

Your delivery plan

✓ Delivery ZIP
Provide the project destination for freight review.

✓ Access & receiving
Flag vehicle-access limits and receiving constraints.

✓ Project timing
Share your preferred timing so it can be reviewed.

✓ Questions still open
List dimensions or selections that need confirmation.

Requested dimensions, finishes, availability, freight and supplied scope are confirmed in the written quotation.

PUT YOUR SKETCH TO WORK

Bring your fence layout into focus.

Use your sketch to list each run length, corner and gate opening in the form. Add slope, mounting and delivery details to help us understand the materials your layout may need.

Keep gate openings separate from fence-run measurements. Note any dimensions that still need checking.
